Doctors at Igando General Hospital in Lagos are battling to save the life of a middle-aged man, who was hit by a stray bullet from soldiers in an OP MESA van, yesterday at Ijegun, Lagos.
The bullet from the soldiers drafted to Ijedodo community to checkmate activities of militants, hit the victim on his left hand.
As at 8p.m. yesterday, the victim, identified as Ifeanyi Mmezi, an indigene of Imo State, was still lying unconscious at the hospital.
An eyewitness, Iya Modina, said: “The incident happened around 1p.m. at Ijegun Bus Stop. The soldiers were in their van driving through stop when they started shooting into the air.
“A man, who was alighting from a commercial bus at the bus stop, was hit. People ran in different directions. The soldiers just drove past.
“A man picked the victim’s phone and called some contacts on it. When his relatives arrived, he was already taken to the hospital.”
However, when spokesperson for 9 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Major Gbadamosi, said he was not aware of such an incident, adding that he had contacted the unit’s head at Ijedodo, who also confirmed that nothing of such happened.
