Akin Ayotunde |
The 27-year-old suspect, Akin Ayotunde, who hails from Umuahia, Abia State, disclosed that his gang had a field day in the operation that lasted five and half hours.
He expressed regret that the operation was marred by the death of the bread winner, whom he claimed died of shock.
The gang, it was gathered, scaled the fence of the building, where a man identified simply as Chike, who had come out of his flat to pick some documents from his car, was accosted.
The three-man gang led him into his sitting room. Chike’s wife was locked up in her bedroom, the children locked up in separate rooms, while their father remained in the sitting room.Ayotunde said: “We stayed back because we were afraid we would be caught by police or members of a vigilante group.
“To while away time, we ate food and fruits and also drank wine that were in the fridge. By 2.30a.m., we started looting the flat.
“I collected N20,000 from the man and also collected some expensive clothes from his ward robe and his wife’s. We moved everything inside his SUV and waited until 4.30a.m.
“As we were about leaving, I tried to wake the man up to open the gate for us, but noticed he was not breathing.
“I shook him vigorously, yet there was no response. I did not kill him, he died from shock. Why would I kill somebody I went to rob? We did not even go with any gun.”
