Abduction of Lagos 4: Controversy as one victim escapes from kidnappers

Yesterday, news went round Channels Avenue in Isheri area of Lagos, scene of weekend’s abduction of four residents of Lekki Gardens, that one of the abducted victims had escaped from the kidnappers’ den.
The man (names withheld) was said to have been sighted in the early hours of yesterday, as he was being driven home in a relative’s car.
There were, however, different accounts as to how he returned home. A version of the account had it that he sneaked from the kidnappers’ den while they were asleep and paddled himself home, from where he contacted a relative who came to pick him from the waterside.
He was said to have arrived at 4a.m.
Another version alleged that an undisclosed ransom was paid for his release. The ransom was said to have been dropped at a designated point in the early hours of yesterday.
It reportedly took two hours after payment before the man was sighted.
Relatives of the concerned man, they all kept mum.
Families of other victims claimed to be unaware of the release.
One of them, who did not want his name mentioned, said: “We also heard that the man had been released, but when we went to their house, nobody gave us any information. They claimed that they were still awaiting his return like everyone else.”

It's rumour—Police
Some policemen stationed in the estate, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described the news as mere rumour, pointing out that if it was true, the rescued man would have shown himself to the appropriate security agency.
When contacted, Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 2 Command, Mr. Abdulmajid Ali, described the news as rumour.
