Lagos task force arrests 87 miscreants, 35 cultists

EIGHTY-SEVEN miscreants and 35 cult members arrested during an overnight operation carried out by operatives of the Lagos State Task Force on Environment around Idi-Oro, Akala and Mushin areas of Lagos, have been prosecuted.
Chairman of the Task Force, SP Olayinka Egbeyemi, who disclosed this, said the suspects were arrested following public complaints over their criminal activities.
Egbeyemi disclosed that the 35 cult members were arrested along with their gang leader, Sanju Agbabiaka, alias 120, during initiation of new members, called Omije Boys, around Akala area.

How house fellowship leader gate-crashes seminars to steal laptops

Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, RRS, of Lagos State Police Command, have arrested a suspect, who specialised in stealing laptops at conferences and seminars, while leading a house fellowship at his home.
The suspect, Ikemefuna Aje, 47, was arrested when he gate-crashed a seminar organised for internet brand managers at a popular hotel in Government Reserved Area, GRA, Ikeja, and stole six laptops.
He allegedly made away with five MacBooks, one HP computer and assorted personal effects of the workshop participants.
According to the Commander of RRS, Assistant Superintendent Olatunji Disu, Ikemufuna, as captured in the closed-circuit television, CCTV, drove into the venue and headed straight into the seminar hall, dressed in a corporate suit, precisely when the participants were having lunch in another room.
According to investigation, he took the items to the Computer Village, Ikeja, and sold them to one Saliu Ibraheem for N1,110,000.

At Tin Can Port: Driver shot for challenging policeman who urinated on truck

FOR challenging a police officer, who reportedly urinated on a truck, Alhaji Dan Jos, a truck owner, was shot dead, yesterday, at Tin Can Island Port, bringing operations to a halt as his colleagues began a protest.
According to an eyewitness, Kabiru Alaba, the yet-to-be identified police officer, attached to the RORO Division, shot Dan Jos for challenging his colleague who urinated on a truck parked in the premises.

The Cross River Police Command said it has arrested a female armourer, Ms. Hope Usang, 25, who leases arms to suspected robbers in Calabar, the state capital.

A 53-year-old shoe merchant, Lekwauwa Mark Otaka, who was arrested at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, few hours to its closure, Wednesday, has disclosed that he inserted 386 grammes of cocaine into his anus over a promise of N1 million to traffic the drugs to Cambodia.
Arrested alongside the father of three was 57-year-old Odogwu Augustine Ike, an automobile dealer in Onitsha, Anambra State. Ike was arrested with 2.150kg of heroin from Tanzania.
The agency’s Commander at the Abuja Airport, Hamisu Lawan, explained that the duo tested positive for narcotic ingestion during routine screening.
According to him, “Odogwu Augustine Ike was caught with 110 wraps of heroin weighing 2.150kg from Tanzania on an Ethiopian Airline flight, while Otaka was found to have inserted seven wraps of cocaine weighing 386 grammes into his anus on an Egypt Airline flight to Cambodia. Both suspects are currently under investigation.”

Suspected smugglers, who were bringing bags of rice from the Benin Republic into Nigeria through the Badagry waterways of Lagos, weekend, jumped into the river to evade arrest by naval personnel.
A wooden boat being used to ferry 80 bags of rice was abandoned by the suspects on sighting a Navy patrol vessel.
The Commanding Officer, Forward Operation Base, Badagry, Navy Captain Abdulhakeem Ojebode, addressed newsmen shortly before handing over the recovered bags of rice to personnel of the Nigeria Customs Services.
He said personnel from the base, who were on patrol around Iyana-Ipaahi waterways around the Badagry creeks, sighted the boat, but before the patrol vessel arrived the location of the boat to investigate, the occupants had jumped into the river.

THERE was jubilation yesterday in Imo State, when  leader of the most dreaded kidnap gang in the country, Henry Chibueze, popularly called Vampire, was killed during a gun battle between his gang and opera-tives of the Inspector General of Police Intelligence Response Team, IRT, in the early hours of yesterday, in Omu Awa Forest, Ikwerre Local Government Area in Rivers State.
A police Sergeant attached to the IRT, Abia State, sustained multiple bullet wounds.
Five suspected members of his gang, including his Second-in-Command, Obinna Elah, 26, a native of Orlu, Imo State, were arrested at the end of the gun battle.
Other suspects arrested were Arinze Abecheta, 24, from Ohafia in Isiala Mbano Local Government Area; Chukwu Ebuka Ikeazota, 23, from Ohohia village, Isiala Mbano area, both in Imo State; Samuel Ugochukwu, 24, from Ezisno village, Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia State and Clifford Aheana of Omu Awa village.
Three of them, who sustained bullet wounds, are reportedly being treated at an undisclosed hospital, with the injured policeman.
Several AK-47 rifles and a cache of ammunition and expended shells of bullets were recovered in the forest used by the kidnappers as hideout.

The Nigeria Police Force in joint operations with the personnel of the Military and Department of State Services, DSS, yesterday, raided the headquarters of the Nigerian Peace Corps and arrested the National Commandant, Mr. Akor Dickson, and 49 others.
The raid, Tuesday night, led to the closure of the Peace Corps of Nigeria secret training camps in Abuja, Kwara and Niger states.
Giving reasons for the raid yesterday, the Nigeria Police Force spokesman, CSP Jimoh Moshood, said intelligence reports indicated that the Peace Corps and other similar groups “were acquiring weapons and conducting covert military training in different locations across the country.

He drank my beer on credit, man owing landlord N120,000 tells court

A 38-year-old tenant, Genesis Genius, yesterday, told a Masaka chief magistrate’s court in Nasarawa State, that his landlord, Manzo Hassan, owes him for the beer he drank in his bar.
Genius, a resident of Masaka, was taken to court by Hassan for owing him N120,000 arrears in rent.
He agreed to pay the arrears, but insisted that his landlord should pay him his beer money first so he can add to it and pay his rent.
According to Genius, “my landlord always comes to my beer parlour to drink. Afterwards, he will not pay me. I am sure he is using it to replace the money I owe him.
“He has been doing it; the money he owes me amounts to a huge sum. He should pay me, so that I can pay him as well.”
The defendant told the court that his landlord has locked up the beer parlour, adding that he even chased his salesgirls and barmen away.
Hassan, in his response, told the court that he drank beer in his tenant’s beer parlour and deliberately refused to pay because of the rent arrears.
He said: “As I discovered that he was not making efforts to pay me my money, I started drinking beer on credit in his beer parlour to cover up the money he owes.

Herdsmen kidnap 3 teachers in Edo

THREE secondary school teachers in Ebomisi Secondary school, Ugbogiobo village in Ovia North-East Local Government Area have been kidnapped by suspected herdsmen.
It was gathered that the kidnappers are demanding for N10 million as ransom.
The three male teachers were abducted, Monday, while returning from school.
It was gathered that three other female teachers, who were said to be in the company of the abducted teachers, were allowed to go by the abductors.
In reaction, students from the school abandoned their classes and made bonfires on the Benin-Akure road leaving passengers and motorists stranded for many hours.

Project manager accussed of N199m theft

Police have arraigned a project manager, Olayinka Olafimihan, before a Tinubu magistrate’s court in Lagos for allegedly stealing N199 million from a company.
The suspect was accused of forging documents to steal cash, building materials and equipment valued at N199,074,880.15 belonging to Twins Wild Passion.
Olafimihan allegedly committed the offence between September 2014 and July 2016, while working as Project Manager of Twin Wild Passion in Lagos.
Police prosecutor, Goodluck Admoni, said the offence of forgery contravenes Section 361 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

Four members of Abia State Vigilante Service, AVS, popularly known as Bakassi Boys, were, yesterday, shot dead by gunmen suspected to be members of a notorious gang in Aba.
This came as two gunmen, operating on a motorcycle, trailed a businessman from a bank and robbed him of an undisclosed sum of money at Ehere Road area of the city.
On the vigilante killings, it was gathered that while three of the AVS personnel died on the spot, the fourth died on his way to the hospital.

3-yr-old kidnapped in Lagos, sold thrice, rescued in Aba

The three-year-old girl kidnapped by her mother’s apprentice, Grace John, who had resumed five days earlier at their Alagbado shop in Lagos two months ago, was found in Abia State, weekend.
The little girl, as reliably gathered, had been sold to three different buyers in the eastern part of the country for prices ranging from N500,000 to N600,000.
After her abduction, she was taken to the kidnappers’ den, a forest in Badagry area of Lagos, from where her abductors proceeded to Onitsha, Anambra State, where she was sold to a woman for N500,000.
Dissatisfied with the choice of a baby girl, the first buyer, with an undisclosed identity, was said to have sold the girl to another buyer for N500,000 in Awka, Anambra State capital. The second buyer, in turn, sold the child to another man in Umuahia, Abia State capital for N600,000.

FIRS seals Kabo Airlines, others over N200m tax liabilities

The Federal Inland Revenue Services, FIRS, yesterday, sealed the offices of Kabo Airlines, Monaco Ventures Limited and Paki International Motors, all in Kano, over tax liabilities.
A statement by the service said Kabo Airlines owes N149,707,949.03 from the assessment year of 2004 to 2013.
According to the head of the enforcement team in Kano, Mr. Bukar Gana, the airline’s liabilities are made up of Income Tax and Education Tax.
He explained that the company did not contest the liabilities, an action which led to the sealing of its premises on Ashton Road, Kano State.
Also sealed up was Paki International Motors, which owes Company Income Tax of N51,148, 117.57, accumulated between 2008 and 2014.

18-yr-old abandons her baby under Oshodi bridge ’cos she doesn't know his father

Operatives of the Lagos State Task Force, yesterday, rescued a four-month-old baby boy abandoned by his mother inside a bag under the bridge at Oshodi.
They also arrested the mother, who said she took the action because she does not know who the baby’s father is and her mother had sent her away from home.
Chairman of the Task Force, Police Superintendent Olayinka Egbeyemi, who confirmed the incident, said that the enforcement team of the agency, while on duty under the bridge at Oshodi, rescued the baby boy, who was put naked inside a bag.
Egbeyemi disclosed further that the mother of the baby was arrested by an official of the agency, as she tried running away after dumping the baby.

APC disciplinary c'ttee summons Sen Kwankwaso

THE Kano State chapter of All Progressives Congress, APC, yesterday, summoned the immediate past governor of the state, Rabiu Kwankwaso, to appear before a disciplinary committee headed by his former Commissioner for Land, Nadu Yahaya.
Reacting, Senator Kwankwaso (Kano Central) dismissed the purported invitation as an attempt by self-serving individuals for political relevance.
Kwankwaso, who spoke through his political aide, Aminu Gwarzo, said: “It sounds very odd for those who are not known to APC to embark on an exercise in futility.”
It will be recalled that crisis first broke out in the party when a faction, led by Mr. Ganduje, mulled taking disciplinary action against Senator Kwankwaso for allegedly “destabilising the peace of the state” during a condo-lence visit to the governor in March last year.

Niger probes N4.4bn LGAs bailout funds

 Governor Abubakar Bello of Niger State has inaugurated a seven-man administrative panel of inquiry to ascertain the utilisation of the N4.4 billion bailout to 12 local government councils for payment of workers' salary arrears.
A statement by Jibrin Baba Ndace, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, said the panel headed by a retired Permanent Secretary in the state civil service, Mr. Daniel Tarachi, is to unravel why the affected local government councils failed to pay staff salaries despite the bailout by the state government.
Governor Sani Bello said the panel became necessary following the high level of financial recklessness and impunity at the grassroots level and the need to curtail the development from further causing more havoc.
He frowned at what he called “irresponsible behaviour of some of the local government chief executives” for refusing to pay their staff even when the state government had released funds to assist them.

25-yr-old mechanic found dead in Calabar waste bin

A 25-year-old mechanic, identified as Okon, has been killed and his lifeless body dumped in a waste bin on White House Street, by Chamley in Calabar South.
Okon, who resides at 25, Webber Street, also in Calabar South, was dumped in the waste bin in the early hours of yesterday, with blood still gushing out from the back of his head and hand.
An eyewitness, Mrs. Ogechi Ogbuji, who sells bean cake (Akara) near the scene of the incident, said when she came out for business early yesterday, she discovered that there was a body in the waste bin at the junction.

A 43-year-old man, Adebisi Akinrin-mola, has been arrested by the Ogun State Police Command for killing one Ademola Asimiyu over a girlfriend.
The suspect reportedly claimed that the deceased accused him of snatching the woman from him and has been warning him to leave her.
Speaking on the incident, which happened Sunday afternoon at Ajebo village in Ijebu-Igbo area of Ogun State, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said: “The suspect, 36, claimed that the deceased has been threatening him over a woman he is dating.

Palm wine laced with drugs kill 3 in Ondo party

THREE persons have reportedly died after drinking palm wine mixed with substances in Ilepa Quarters, Ikare-Akoko area of Ondo State, during their friend’s birthday bash.
The deceased, whose identities could not be ascertained at press time, attended their friend’s birthday and were served palm wine. The three died with about eight others rushed to the hospital after consuming the liquor and complaining of stomach upset.
The celebrant was alleged to have personally served them the drink during the party.

Wife of Edo Dep Gov comes to aid of abandoned triplets

The wife of the Edo State Deputy Governor, Mrs Maryann Shaibu, was a sad woman, weekend, as she visited the woman abandoned by her husband after giving birth to triplets in Benin, the state capital.
The condition under which the triplets were moved the Deputy Governor’s wife to order that they be moved immediately to a paediatric centre for proper medical care.
Mrs Shaibu also donated an undisclosed amount of money in cash along with some baby care items, milk and food stuff, with a promise to assist the mother of the kids to establish her business as a hair stylist.
The distressed mother was forced to cry out for assistance when the cost of taking care of the home and five children became unbearable.
Mrs Shaibu assured the nursing mother of more assistance to ensure that the babies are well taken care of, adding “I am doing this because children are blessings from God. So we will not allow them to die of malnutrition.

A 50-year-old housewife, Jenny Ibor Okpa, of Ofalosi village in Nko, Yakurr Local Government Area of Cross River, yesterday, died from kerosene explosion.
It was gathered that the deceased attempted to light a lantern with a matchstick, when it exploded and flames engulfed her entire room.
An eyewitness said that it was the woman’s cry for help that attracted her husband, neighbours and other good Samaritans, who fought hard to put out the fire on her body. But she had reportedly suffered severe burns.

A 40-year-old woman and a mother of two, Foluke Owolewa, arrested by men of Ogun State Police Command for killing her one-day-old baby, has said she took the step because her two other children were not being taken care of by her husband.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Abimbola Oyeyemi, in a statement, said the incident, which happened at Ipamesan area of Sango Ota, was reported at Sango Divisional Headquarters by the Vice Chairman of the Community Development Association in the area.

Fayose storms Finance ministry over withheld Ekiti allocation

Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State, took his complaint of the Federal Government’s failure to pay his state’s, January budget support allocation of N1.1 billion to the Federal Ministry of Finance, yesterday.
He told newsmen in Abuja, that he was at the ministry to follow-up on the payment which he said his state deserved, just like all other states of the federation.
His words, “I believe I should do a follow-up today (yesterday) to meet with the Minister of Finance for an update because she actually called me  on Tuesday that she just got back but she is going to look into it today (yesterday) and have it resolved as soon as possible.
“You will however appreciate that Ekiti civil servants are restive, having spent Christmas and there is no money in January, obviously there will be challenges.
“By the time I got here the Minister had already gone for the Federal Executive Council, FEC, meeting, but I met the Special Adviser, who assured me that the matter will be resolved when the Minister returns.
“What we are talking about is part of the monthly allocation and the budget support which is about N1.1billion that has not been paid.
“I believe this should be done immediately and I want to believe also that it was a mix up and not politically motivated but if it is political, they will have a lot of questions to answer why it should be so.
“If they want to fight Fayose, they should fight Fayose, not the civil servants of Ekiti, but I appreciate her  promise to resolve the matter promptly.
“So, naturally I have to be here when it happened to be  Ekiti State alone, I have to be suspicious. The Minister has given me her word, at her level as a minister, that is good enough.
“If the promise of the Minister to resolve this issue as quickly as possible is not adhered to, I will have to bring it back to the public domain. We are all in the court of the public opinion where the public is able to judge whether justice is served at all times. Governance is beyond all of us but I want to believe that they will do it.”

A suspected kidnapper arrested by the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team , IRT, in connection with last Thursday's kidnap of Secretary of the Isheri North Estate, Government Reserved Area, Lagos, has revealed that he got N250,000 from the N5 million ransom paid for the victim, Mr Dayo Adekoya's release.
Gunmen numbering 20, stormed the estate at midnight, killing three guards who challenged them, before gaining entry into Adekoya’s apartment whisking him away in their waiting boat.
Adekoya was however released in the early hours of Monday  and has since reunited with his family.
Operatives of the IGP’s IRT, traced one of Adekoya’s abductors to Century Village in Ogijo town, Ogun State, where he was arrested Tuesday.
During interrogation, the suspect identified as Joseph Omoni, a native of Ajapa community in Ese-Odo Local Government Area of Ondo State, admitted he participated in the crime, adding that he got  N250,000 as his share of the ransom paid.

Sunday Ushie, a man arrested by officers of Cross River State Police Command, has revealed that he killed his ‘woman friend’ before having sex with her because she turned down his amorous demands after collecting huge amount of money from him.
It was learned that Ushie was arrested after the landlord of the deceased reported to the police that his tenant, Nnenna Samuel, was killed by the suspect, with her right hand, left leg and mouth severed.
When the suspect was paraded by the police in Calabar, the 35-year-old Ushie said he was forced into committing the act because the deceased usually collect money from him and would never allow him to make love to her.

Operatives of Lagos State Task Force have arrested and charged to court a suspect, identified as Mr. Benjamin Archibong, 20, for allegedly attacking and injuring a Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, officer, Mr. Omomoyesan Olumide, while on official duty around Lekki-Ajah area.
It will be recalled that a similar incident occurred in Apapa ports area late last year, when a LASTMA officer, while on duty, was attacked and killed by some rampaging commercial motorcyclists, popularly called Okadamen.

A member of a notorious One Chance robbery gang, Ajibola Alao, 29, arrested by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, RRS, of Lagos State Police Command, has said he failed to heed his late mother’s advice not to steal the fruits of other people’s sweat.
The suspect, who showed remorse for his actions, was arrested for allegedly robbing innocent victims.
Alao was arrested last Thursday during one of his routine operations in Oshodi area of the state, after dispossessing their lone passenger, Mr. Asotie Benedict, of his two phones and N61,000.
The suspect, in company of the driver and conductor, using their operational bus, a Volkswagen Transporter, Danfo, with the number plates APP 820 XE, picked up their passenger, Benedict, 24, at Ladipo.
But Alao and his accomplices refused to drop Benedict at Oshodi Under Bridge, his destination.
On seeing LASTMA officials at the bus stop, they pretended they were ascending the bridge towards Oshodi Oke; it was at this point they dispossessed Asotie of his Blackberry Passport and Samsung, and his wallet containing N60,000 before forcing him to alight, while the vehicle was in motion.

Unidentified jogger slumps, dies in Lagos

An unidentified man reportedly slumped, yesterday morning, while jogging at Ilupeju by-pass area, and was confirmed dead at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH, where he was rushed to by the response unit of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA.
It was gathered from police officers at the scene of the incident that the man, believed to be in his 20s, was wearing Arsenal FC branded jersey, with no other form of identification on him.

Terrorists chop off colleagues limbs for wanting to surrender

A 31-year-old Boko Haram insurgent, Muhammad Abubakar, yesterday, said his hand and leg were chopped off because he was planning to surrender and quit the battle in Sambisa Forest.
Abubakar disclosed this to newsmen in Maiduguri during a briefing organised by Maj.-Gen. Lucky Irabor, the Theatre Commander, Operation Lafiya Dole, to update journalists on “Operation Rescue Finale.”
Abubakar said he was punished because of his decision to renounce his membership of the group and embrace peace.
According to him, “I had told a friend, Hassan Dan-Guduma, that I was going to surrender as the movement had no meaning to me anymore.

Terrorism Charge: Court adjourns Ndume’s trial till March 27

A Federal High Court, sitting in Abuja yesterday, adjourned till March 27 to resume hearing on the four-count terrorism charge pending against Senator Mohammed Ndume.
Ndume, who is representing Borno South federal constituency, was docked before the court on December 3, 2013, over allegation that he was one of the top sponsors of the Boko Haram sect.
The Federal Government alleged that he was the one that hitherto furnished the sect with information that aided their terrorist operations in the country.

A 37-year-old commercial bus driver was allegedly killed, Sunday night, by a Hausa food vendor in Igando area of Lagos during an argument over N30 debt.
The death of the commercial bus driver, identified as Olalekan Adeleke, popularly known as Star Boy, sparked off protests yesterday, as irate youths set fire to the suspect’s belongings.
Late Adeleke, 37, an only son, who plied Iyana-Ipaja/Iyana-Iba route, visited a canteen owned by the suspect, identified as Adamu, at College Bus Stop at about 11p.m.
He requested for noodles and two eggs to be prepared for him, after which he was given a bill of N230. But he was said to have paid N200, and Adamu started a fight.
Another customer, Kehinde Ayanduro, appealed to Adamu to allow Adeleke to go home to get the balance of N30, which Adeleke did.
But when he came back with the money, Adamu still continued the fight.

A 35-year-old disabled man, Sylvanus Ukpan, has been arrested by the police in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State for allegedly supplying charms and locally-made bullet proof vests to criminals in the state and neighbouring Cross River State.
Parading the suspects, yesterday, at the Command Headquarters in Makurdi, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Bashir Makama, said the suspect was nabbed by a special anti-crime squad, code-named Operation Zenda.

In calabar: Man kills twin daughters, says they’re witches

Operatives of the Cross River State Police Command have arrested a 40-year-old man, Anyanime Festus, who allegedly poisoned his twin daughters in Akampka Local Government Area of Cross River, because he felt they were responsible for his parents’ death.
The arrest was effected by the Divisional Police Station, Akampka, before the suspect was transferred to Police Headquarters in Calabar.
The suspect allegedly gave his 11-year-old daughters a black substance, believed to be poison to drink, which led to their death on January 10 and 11.
A source said: “The man told us that his daughters confessed to be witches and that he had no choice other than to kill them before they kill him. So he mixed acid with malt, took the twins to a bush path and gave them the substance to drink.”

FAAN dismisses staff over N70m furniture allowances fraud

A Level 6 officer of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN (names withheld), has been dismissed by the agency for allegedly diverting N70 million Naira furniture allowances over a period of three years.
The dismissal followed the recommendation of a committee set up by the Managing Director of FAAN, Mr. Saleh Dunoma.
The former staff, who allegedly diverted the said sum between 2013 and 2016, has been given her dismissal letter, though the Economic and Financial Crime Commission, EFCC, is still investigating the matter.
A source, who does not want to be named, said EFCC was informed of the dismissal of the staff by FAAN.

A 33-year-old barber, who was arrested by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, while fleeing with vandalised vehicles parts from a company in Victoria Island, Lagos, has alleged that a spare parts dealer at the popular Ladipo International Market, Mushin, Lagos, was his boss.
The suspect, Olawasegun Oladimeji, who just finished serving a three-month jail term over a similar incident, alleged that he had been working for the auto parts dealer for eight years.
The suspect stormed an unnamed company’s premises, where he allegedly vandalised some vehicles. He was alleged to have also stolen some phones belonging to the guards, who were sleeping.
However, one of the guards woke up and sighted the intruder leaving the premises. He raised the alarm that attracted a team of RRS on patrol, who apprehended him and recovered several Toyota Corolla body parts and some phones from him.

5 domestic staff of Lamido, former Jigawa gov arrested over missing N100m

The Assistant Inspector-General, AIG, in charge of Police Zone 1, Kano, has detained a driver and four domestic staff of former Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, over alleged theft of N100 million.
Security sources in Kano confided said the five suspects were taken into custody last Thursday, following “personal complaint” to the police by Alhaji Sule Lamido.
The multiple sources further revealed that the money, which was allegedly kept under “ground bunker” in the wife’s wing of the multi-billion naira apartment at NNDC Quarters of Kano, was pilfered to “insignificant amount” before it was discovered.

For posing as a journalist working with TV Continental, TVC, a man, Soji Gboye, was arrested by operatives of the Lagos State Task Force, weekend. He told newsmen that he usually gets out of trouble by claiming to be a journalist.
Disclosing this to newsmen, Chairman of the task force, SP Olayinka Egbeyemi, said the suspect, who lives at 5, Adesoye Street, Mende, Maryland, Lagos, was arrested while obstructing the personnel of the agency from performing their legitimate duty around the area.
Soji was arrested alongside 67 miscreants during an enforcement exercise carried out in Maryland area of the state.

Four suspected land-grabbers arrested for alleged murder in Ogun

Ogun State Police Command has arrested four land-grabbers, who were allegedly involved in the murder of one Sidikatu Onasanya, 52, at Imoro.
The state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, in a statement, said the suspected land-grabbers, Adewale Abimbola, Monday Benzon, Mukaila Azeez and Shodeinde Oluwafemi, were arrested Wednesday.
Oyeyemi explained that the arrest was made following a report from one of the children of the deceased, Wasiu Onasanya, who complained that he was in the village when the suspected land-grabbers came and attacked him with dangerous weapons.

US-bound woman dies in Lagos auto crash

4-yr-old girl sold for N350,000 in Enugu, recovered in Abia

A four-year-old girl (names withheld), pupil of Unity Nursery/Primary School, Inyi, Enugu State, allegedly stolen by her mother’s younger sister and the boyfriend, and sold to one Florence Nwokocha for N350,000, has been recovered by police operatives in Abia State.
This was disclosed by Enugu State Police Command in a statement in Enugu yesterday.
The Command’s spokesman, Ebere Amaraizu, said report of the missing girl was made to the police on December 15, 2016 by Inyi community.
According to him, “following the development, the incident was reported to the state command where it was referred to the Gender/Anti-Human Trafficking section of the state Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department.

Plateau returns 145 trafficked children to Bauchi

The 145 trafficked children being ferried in two trucks that were intercepted in Jos, Plateau State capital a week ago, have been returned to Bauchi State, where majority of them were picked from.
Representatives of the Plateau State Police Command, Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, and that of the state chapter of Jama’atul Nasril Islam, JNI, accompanied the children to Bauchi, where they will be handed over to the state government.
However, some parents of the children, who made efforts to get the children from police custody, were arrested and charged along with the three Mallams and two drivers, who were with the children in the trucks.

One of those who survived the attack, Mallam Abubakar Modu, said there was no need to blame the Air Force for the strike as it was not deliberate.
Also yesterday, it was revealed that two deaths were recorded and five discharged from hospitals from the over 80 injured victims of the attack.
This is just as former Military President, General Ibrahim Babangida (retd.) and Governor Abubakar Bello of Niger State commiserated with the government and people of Borno State over the accidental bombing.

Condemnation, yesterday, continued to trail Monday’s bombing of worshippers in the University of Maiduguri mosque in Borno State, as the Islamist militant group, Boko Haram, claimed responsibility for the act.
The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, and All Progressives Congress, APC, have joined other Nigerians to condemn the attack, in which a professor of Veterinary Medicine, Professor Aliyu Mani, and six others were killed.
Also yesterday, some students of the University of Maiduguri, UNIMAID, called for proactive security measures to contain the frequent attacks on their campus by Boko Haram terrorists.
A video featuring an audio recording, purporting to be that of Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, was posted on social media late on Monday.
“The bomb that exploded on Monday morning; our brothers are responsible for it,” the recording said.
CAN, while condemning the bombing, commiserated with the families of the victims and expressed optimism that the terrorist menace will soon be history.

Yenagoa 7-yr-old Torture: They killed my son over a church’s revelation, mother cries out

Mrs. Erueke John, the biological mother of late Joshua Zikeme, the seven-year-old boy, who was allegedly tortured to death at Akaba community in Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State by his father and step-mother over allegation of witchcraft, yesterday, cried out that her son was a victim of a vicious father and not a wizard.
Mrs. John claimed that the allegation of wizardry by the suspects was based on a revelation from a church based in Yenagoa.
According to her, “the church is a one room place of worship. They claimed they took my son to the place and they were told he was a wizard.”
She said her son was tied to a stake and savagely brutalised to death.
The police had, Monday, arrested the deceased boy’s father, Idiesy Zikeme, and the step-mother, Eunice Zikeme, on suspicion of torturing the boy to death.
The suspects, it was gathered, are to be transferred to the homicide section of the state Police Command for further interrogation.

Lagos landlord dumps tenant's properties outside

Chidi Iwuoha, a tenant of 19 Kayode Alabi Street, Ogba, Lagos, who was ejected from his two bedroom flat over his inability to pay the balance of his rent, has accused his landlord, a retired Customs officer, of conniving with court bailiffs to carry out the action.
Iwuoha claimed that he was neither served quit notice nor court summons before he was forcefully thrown out with his wife and three children, aged eight, 10 and 12.
Yesterday, his properties were still outside the two-storey building, including a pot of stew, which the family intended to eat when the unexpected happened.
It was gathered that the father of three moved into the building in November 2014. But by 2015, he said his business was no longer flourishing, thereby finding it difficult to pay his rent.

4-month-old boy found dead In Calabar gutter

The dead body of a four-month-old baby boy was, in the early hours of yesterday, found in a gutter, wrapped in a polythene bag, at Beebobsco Bus Stop along Murtala Mohammed Highway in Calabar.
An eyewitness, Eme Douglas, who sells cement close to where the baby was discovered, said she saw the baby when she opened her shop in the early hours of yesterday, while sweeping the premises.
He said: “I saw the lifeless body of the baby boy this morning (yesterday), while sweeping our premises. Although I did not know when the baby was dropped there, I am certain it was in the early hours of today (yesterday).

AT an Ikeja High Court yesteday, a professional photographer, Mr. Adekunle Ayodele, emotionally narrated how he helped police to take photographs of his slain son, Damilare Ayodele, at the scene of crime.
He also told the court that the suspects had confessed to police that they killed his son because he was too proud.
He said: “On getting to the scene of the crime, where my son lay lifeless, the police asked me where they could get a photographer to take pictures of the corpse as evidence.
“I told them I was a professional photographer; they requested that I should take the photographs. I brought out a camera and I took the pictures with tears in my eyes.”
Ayodele made this claim during the trial of three men, Emmanuel Eguku, 23; Qudus Adeyemi, 24; and Deji Odukoya, 23, for alleged murder of Damilare.

Pastor, 4 others arrested over robbery

A senior Pastor at the Ministry of the Holy Ghost, Joe Akan, and four other suspected members of his gang have been arrested in connection with a robbery operation in Agege area of Lagos State, where a Toyota Highlander SUV was snatched from its owner.
Two suspected members of the gang, Charles Lekan, 25, and Uche, who is on the run, worked at the same garage in Agege.
The alleged mastermind, Uche, was said to have sold the idea to Lekan and Pastor Akan last week and reportedly invited Obi Isaac, 33, and Wasiu Jamiu, 26, for the operation, which took place last Friday.
Trouble, however, started after they were unable to sell the car at an initial price of N800,000.

Police intercept two trucks with 145 under-age children in Plateau

Plateau State Police Command, yesterday, said it intercepted two trucks conveying 145 children, aged between four and eight, from Bauchi and Jigawa states.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Terna Tyopev, in a statement in Jos, said the children were to be sent to Plateau, Kaduna and Nasarawa states.
He said: “Our investigation has revealed that these children, who are all male, were to be taken to places that even co-ordinators of their movement did not even know. Police is liaising with the Plateau State chapter of Jama’atul Nasril Islam, JNI and other stakeholders to establish contact with the two states government for the return of the children to their parents.”
He added that those behind the action would soon be charged to court to serve as a deterrent to others because “this trend, if not checked, will cause embarrassment to Plateau State, north central and the nation.”

26-year-old man kills wife over sex in Ogun

Men of Ogun State Police Command have arrested a 26-year-old man, Matthew Oguntade, for allegedly killing his 20-year-old wife, Mary, over her refusal to allow him make love to her.
The incident occurred at Owode-Ijako, Sango-Ota, Ado-Odo/Ota last Friday, when the suspect invited his wife to come and collect N1,000 to prepare food for the family.
A source said when the late wife arrived, the husband attempted to forcefully have sex with her and while they were struggling, she got strangled.

10 dead as C-River communities go to war over human head for chief's burial

An alleged beheading of a young man by a chief hunter, purportedly for the burial ceremony of a high chief, weekend, led to hostilities between two neighbouring communities in Obubra Local Government Area of Cross River State, which has left over 10 people dead and many houses razed.
The conflict between the people of Ogwurude and their Oyidah neighbours began when head hunters from Oyidah community allegedly harvested the head of a young man which they intended to use in the burial ceremony of a chief.

SENATE TO BUHARI: Don’t abandon projects, policies of Obasanjo, Yar’Adua, Jonathan

LASSA FEVER: NCDC confirms 9 deaths, 20 cases in 7 states

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, has confirmed nine deaths and 20 cases of Lassa Fever in seven states since the beginning of the dry season in December 2016; even as it commences implementation of its plan to strengthen nationwide response capacity to anticipated Lassa Fever cases.
However, the Nasarawa State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Daniel Iya, confirmed four deaths and 16 cases in the state, while 38 people are now under surveillance.
In a statement, the Technical Assistant, Communication, of the NCDC, Dr Lawal Bakare, alerted Nigerians on the increasing cases of Lassa Fever and the need for increased focus on prevention and preparedness.
Bakare noted that Plateau State recorded three deaths out of six confirmed cases, while Ogun State recorded two deaths and two confirmed cases.
He added: “In Taraba State, there was one death out of the six confirmed cases,while Nasarawa recorded three deaths. Other states that have recorded one case each, without confirmed deaths, in-clude Edo, Ondo and Rivers.”

Late former Governor of Niger State, Abdulkadir Kure, was laid to rest yesterday in Minna amidst tears by family members, friends and political associates.
The first series of prayers were held in the deceased GRA residence with Chief Imam of Minna, Sheikh Ibrahim Abu Fari, officiating.
The prayer session was a follow up to series of prayers attended by the Etsu Lapai, Alhaji Umar Bago Tafida; Estu Agaie, Alhaji Yusuf Nuhu and Emir of Minna, Alhaji Farouq Bahago after the corpse arrived Minna, Tuesday night.
The body was later ferried to the Eid prayer ground for funeral prayers at about 11.30a.m. However, it took a while to get the body into an ambulance for the journey as hundreds of sympathisers struggled to have a glimpse and touch the body.

The clash broke out yesterday morning and lasted for hours. Weapons such as Dane guns, bows and arrows, cutlasses, daggers among others, were said to be freely used by the warring parties.
Just few days ago, cattle rustlers attacked Angwa Umadi village in Shiroro Local Government Area of the state, killing a Senior Secondary School 2 student and injuring 15 others.
The state Police Command's Public Relations Officer, DSP Bala Elkana, confirmed the attack, saying that four people have been confirmed dead from both sides.
