Operatives of Lagos State Task Force have arrested and charged to court a suspect, identified as Mr. Benjamin Archibong, 20, for allegedly attacking and injuring a Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, officer, Mr. Omomoyesan Olumide, while on official duty around Lekki-Ajah area.
It will be recalled that a similar incident occurred in Apapa ports area late last year, when a LASTMA officer, while on duty, was attacked and killed by some rampaging commercial motorcyclists, popularly called Okadamen.
On the latest incident, the suspect was said to have attacked and obstructed a Team B LASTMA officials from impounding a commercial Volkswagen bus with number plates FKJ 688 XV, whose driver resisted arrest for picking and dropping passengers at unauthorised place around Lekki-Ajah area.
Archibong, from Akwa Ibom, a resident of Jakande Estate, Lekki, Phase 1, Lagos, was said to have been arrested and charged for assault, obstruction and conduct likely to cause breach of peace before Magistrate Adepeju Odusanya of Court 15, Samuel Ilori Magistrate's Court, Ogba, Lagos.
Prosecuting Counsel, Mr. Adedoyin Odukoya, disclosed that the suspect, pleaded not guilty and was granted N100,000 bail with two sureties in like sum
While the matter was adjourned to February 28 for further hearing, Magistrate Odusanya stressed that the two sureties must be residents of Lagos State.
The Chairman of Lagos State Task Force, Superintendent of Police Olayinka Egbeyemi, disclosed that the suspect was charged to court based on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni.
Egbeyemi maintained that the operatives of the agency rescued the wounded LASTMA officials from the suspect on January 31, around Lekki-Ajah area of the state.
Egbeyemi added that the charges against the suspect would serve as deterrent to the public not to obstruct any security or government officials discharging their legitimate duties.
