Woman dumps 3 weeks old baby, arrested

A 27-year-old woman, who was arrested while dumping her three-week-old baby close to a filling station in Festac, Amuwo-Odifin Local Government Area of Lagos State, has blamed her action on inability to fend for her child.
This is just as two other babies, who were also dumped by unknown persons, were recovered at separate places in Festac Town.
For 27-year-old nursing mother, a hawker identified as Bose Ojo, she was sighted by a resident, when she dropped the baby, neatly wrapped in a shawl, close to a gas station on 21 Road.
The resident was said to have gone to ascertain what was dropped, only to be greeted by the cry of the baby. She immediately raised the alarm, following which Ojo, who was fleeing the scene, was apprehended and handed over to policemen from Festac Division.
How I did it—SUSPECT
However, during interrogation, the woman claimed she only kept the baby at a safe place so she can go about her business of selling sachet water.
She also claimed she had difficulty in taking care of the baby because her husband abandoned her.
She said: “Whoever said I dumped my baby is telling lies. My husband is a bus driver. His name is Oduayo. We were living in Orile-Iganmu until our house was demolished. My husband abandoned us three months ago.
“I have been selling sachet water since then to take care of myself and the baby.”
Police sources said the woman had no means of taking proper care of the baby, adding that she was not married to the bus driver in question.
The sources further hinted that during investigation it was discovered that Ojo never went for anti-natal when she was pregnant, adding that she delivered the baby all by herself in a bush.
As at yesterday, the baby was still at Mother and Care Hospital, First avenue, Festac, where doctors were administering medication on her.
According to the sources, the two other children recovered included a six-week-old boy.
