Time was when DSTV was the Lord of the manor. It dictated the terms of
its offerings and treated its customers like vassals who existed at the
pleasure of the emperor. Its lowest rate was N2600 or thereabout for a
month of primary channels on its pay tv network.
Then came Startimes
which tailored its offering to suit the pocket of the masses. For as
low as N1200 per month you can get on its bouquet and enjoy the best of
satelite television and it went further to design a bouquet for as low
as N800. Per month. The people flocked to the Chinese powered network to
the detriment of South African owned DSTV.
Of course the
implication of this was not lost on the owners of DSTV. They came out
with GoTV and N1800 was the highest monthly subsription. Now DSTV is
going for the kill , it has just introduced GOTV lite and the asking
price is just N400 per month to watch at least 21 channels on its
network.
And if you wish to do one year at a go you pay just N300 per month for subscription.
Yes this is the power of competition and the era of the customer becoming the king to be courted.
We wait patiently for the response of Startimes... May be we would pay
just N200 to watch premium offerings on pay television before long. Time
will TELL
For now let the competition continue to the advantage of the customer.
