How cleric inserted needles in akara for beggars

A 50-year-old Muslim cleric, Mohammed Yusuf, and his daughter, Salamat, 18, were yesterday charged before a Tinubu Magistrate’s Court in Lagos, for attempted murder. They allegedly inserted needles in the Akaras (bean cakes) they distributed to beggars.
Father and daughter are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and attempted murder, preferred against them by the police.
The prosecutor, Ben Ekundayo, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on August 5 at about 2p.m. at Offin Street, Balogun area of Lagos Island.
He alleged that the defendants gave akara, that had needles inserted in them, to beggars with the intent to endangering their lives.

According to him, “the Muslim cleric sent his daughter to give the beggars, near the mosque, the bean-cakes. However, when one of them (the beggars) cut it he found needles in the middle.
“Other beggars were notified and one of them, who knows the cleric’s daughter and the school where she teaches, led them there and she was apprehended.
“She in turn led them to her father.”
The prosecutor explained that the offences committed were punishable under Sections 409 and 228 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
However, the two pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Consequently, Magistrate Ade Adefulire admitted the defendants to N500,000 bail each with two sureties each in like sum.
He said that the sureties must be blood relations and account owners with a deposit of N100,000 in their bank accounts and then adjourned the case to September 29 for mention.
