Cleric's assassination document: Shekarau threatens police with legal action

Former governor of Kano State, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, has threatened legal action against the Nigeria Police if they failed to exonerate him of complicity in the death of a Kano Islamic cleric, killed in 2007 during morning prayers.
On Thursday, April 27, some national dailies  published a story that documents discovered by The Police at a Senator’s residence at Maitama, Abuja, linked the cleric’s death to Shekarau.

However, in a statement Shekarau, a former Minister of Education, asked the police to “commence an immediate and thorough investigation on the content of said document recovered at the Senator’s residence.
“I urge you to recognise the need for the urgent handling of this matter to speedily exonerate me.”
The Sardainan Kano warned that “failure to do this within two weeks of the receipt of this letter may compel me to initiate appropriate legal action, to enforce my fundamental human right, as provided for in the Constitution.
“I am constrained to say this disclosure amounts to defamation of character, capable of tarnishing my image and pitching the sensibilities of the public against me.
“I request your good offices to take further action than just mere mention of the discovery of the incriminating document.”
