THE House of Representatives, yesterday, suspended further deliberations on a bill seeking to make provisions for the prohibition and punishment of sexual harassment of students in educational institutions.
The bill sent to the House for concurrence from the Senate had to be stepped aside for now because of its restrictive scope. The bill, presented for second reading by the Majority Leader, Femi Gbajabiamila (APC, Lagos), pointed out the reasons why the bill should be expanded to accommodate other forms of sexual harassment outside higher institutions.
Presenting the bill, Gbajabiamila argued that “the way the bill as it is, is restrictive. What about secondary schools and the work place? It did not talk about sexual harassment in the banks, churches and homes; we should look for a way to widen its scope to encompass sexual harassment in all places.”
At this point, the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara, called for debate, but demanded clarification immediately after the debate.
