Medical doctor jumps into Lagos Lagoon, drowns

The doctor's car at the scene
A medical doctor, identified as Orji, jumped from the Third Mainland Bridge into the Lagoon yesterday and drowned. Time was 4:50p.m.
At the scene of the tragedy, it was gathered that the victim jumped into the lagoon at a point between Adekunle and Adeniji end of the Bridge.
Sources said the man instructed his driver to stop the vehicle, saying he wanted to discuss a confidential issue with a client on phone.

Efforts to speak with the driver of the victim proved abortive as the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, prevented newsmen from gaining access to him.
Officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, and officers from Adeniji Police Station, Yaba, were at the scene strategising on how to recover the body.
Confirming the tragedy, General Manager, LASEMA, Adesina Tiamiyu, narrated that the agency received a distress call that a man parked his grey-coloured Nissan Sport Utility Vehicle, SUV, with number plates LND 476 EE, at about 4.50p.m. around Adekunle, inward Third Mainland Bridge and jumped into the Lagos Lagoon.
According to him, preliminary investigation at the scene revealed that the man, said to be a medical doctor named Orji, suddenly ordered the driver to pull over, got down from the car and jumped into the water.
“The vehicle and the driver have been taken to Adeniji Adele Police Station for further investigation, while effort is ongoing to recover his body,” he added.
