One Year After: DSS announces officers' death to widows

The Department of State Services, DSS, has officially confirmed to wives of the seven operatives, who were ambushed by militants at Ishawo area of Lagos, that they are dead.
This is coming one year after the incident occurred.
The slain operatives, who were on a mission to rescue a kidnapped woman, when they were ambushed are: Uzo Nwafor, O. O. Kayode, Luke Amole, S. Owolabi, S. Adegbite, Ben Mafo and Bayo Adeniyi.
Despite several publications and confessional statement by a militant, who was later arrested by the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team, of how the operatives were killed, DSS insisted that its men were still alive.
It also assured their relatives that they would return to them in good condition.
That its present position was not unconnected with the discovery of the operatives' uniforms in an uncompleted building at Ishawo during a military mop up operation of the creeks.
The widows were invited to DSS Lagos Command at Shagisha, and given a cheque of N250,000 each.
They were told to remain in their official apartments until their late husbands’ benefits were paid.
However, an aggrieved relative of one of the slain operatives, Mr. Nwafor Paul, said: “After over one year of sorrow, pains and false hope, DSS has finally alerted widows of its missing officers that their husbands died as heroes in the line of duty and gave them 250,000 each as its own support to bury their husbands.
“When the widows asked for their bodies, DSS said they could not locate them.
“The Minister of Information once said that most Nigerians spent up to 100,000 on a bottle of Champagne. So we ask, if the lives of these fallen heroes are worth only about two bottles of Champagnes?”
