A couple escaped death at the popular 7-Up Junction, Ogbor Hill, Aba, Abia State, yesterday, when a cow hit the windscreen of their vehicle, while in motion.
Eyewitnesses said that the couple was brought out unharmed from their Toyota Camry, with number plates FF 923 ABJ, while the windscreen was badly damaged.
One of the eyewitnesses said: “We were at a car wash to clean our vehicles, when we heard a bang. No one knew where the cow emerged from. It crashed into the car, which was speeding. The woman and her husband were trapped; we managed to rescue them unhurt.”
Reacting to the incident, the Civil Liberties Organisation, CLO, called on the state government to check the activities of cattle dealers at the waterside cattle market.
In a statement by Professor Charles Chinekezi, Chairman of CLO, Aba Unit, the organisation lamented that the activities of cattle dealers in Ogbor Hill had become a threat to road users.
It said: “CLO is worried on the danger posed by the activities of cattle dealers on the Ogbor Hill Waterside Bridge, along Aba-Ikot Ekpene and Omoba roads. It has been a common sight to see stray cows even at night, wandering and constituting nuisance to the environment.
“Before this incident at the 7-Up Junction, which nearly took the life of the couple, cows being led to the abattoir beside the river had run amok, injured pedestrians and caused auto crashes. The government should make haste and relocate the abattoir to avert further accidents.”
