One police officer was feared dead, yesterday, while his colleague and a female trader were said to have sustained life-threatening gunshot wounds when a gang of robbers ran into at police checkpoint at Ughelli, Delta State.
The incident, it was gathered, occurred at 6:30a.m. along the Agbarha-Otor-Ughelli Road.
Giving details of the incident, a commercial motorcycle operator, Okadaman, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the policemen, who had mounted a checkpoint along the road, were taken unawares by the gunmen.
He said: “The policemen had stopped an Okada (commercial motorcycle) carrying a female iced-fish seller, heading to Ughelli, when the gunmen shot at the officers, killing one, while others, including the female passenger and another policeman, sustained gunshot wounds.”
Confirming the incident, the state acting Police Public Relations Officer, Andrew Aniameka, said: “I cannot give you details on the incident because the officers who are supposed to brief me are battling to save the lives of the injured officers.”
However, a senior officer at the Ughelli Area Command disclosed that the officer had been referred to the Delta State University Teaching Hospital, DELSUTH, Oghara, for treatment.
