By the grace of God, I understand features, principles and characteristics of capitalism and it's mode of operation. I am also conversant the basic principles of socialist economy.
None of them created an Utopia were every body who wants to work got work.
There is no economy in the world that has attained full employment for its citizens.
There is no economy that has given people their desired jobs or pay commensurate reward.
There are always inequalities and discontents.
Human want are inelastic while the resources to satisfy them are finite.
The God who created the mankind did not endow us with equal talent and equal abilities.

The parable of the Talent shows that individuals are given different talents. Even those who fail to utilise their talent are warned that they will lose it.

Police arrest bus load of ballot boxes in Delta

THE police in Issele-Uku, Aniocha North Local Government Area, Delta State, yesterday, apprehended a bus loaded with ballot boxes.
The ballot boxes numbering over 30,  were dropped off by a luxury bus heading to the East from the North at Onicha-Ugbo Junction.
According to a dependable source, the luxury bus had zoomed off before the people in the area could draw attention of the police to the incident, adding that a smaller bus with number plate Edo USL 832 XL, that came to pick the boxes at the junction was arrested with the driver by the police.
The source, who did not want his name in the print, said the boxes had the picture of one of the major political parties' presidential candidate and his running mate on them.
Effort made to reach the Divisional Police Officer for comments on the issue proved abortive at press time.
However, a senior police officer attached to the division confirmed the arrest, and added that investigation was on to ascertain the source of the boxes.
Noting that the boxes were similar to the ones used in the days of Federal Electoral Commission, FEDECO, he said the driver confessed that they were being used to raise funds for the said presidential candidate at the grassroots.
The police source said the ballot boxes were sent through a waybill from the Kano central office of the party.
The driver and the bus loaded with the ballot boxes were still being detained at the police station at press time.
Contacted, the state secretary of the party (names withheld) said he was not aware of the incident.
Another source in the party, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said: “I am not aware of anything like that. If at all it is true, it must be the handwork of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, because there is nothing they cannot do. PDP can stage-manage anything.”
Also contacted, the state PDP Publicity Secretary, Mr. Deinghan Ray-Macaulay, said: “PDP could not involve itself in anything like that when we are sure of victory at the elections, particularly in Delta State.
“We are getting upper hand so we cannot do a thing like that. It is only those who are not sure of victory that can do such a thing and forment trouble.
“I strongly appeal to the police to carry out a thorough investigation into the matter.”

Woman arrested with 430 grammes of heroin in her private part

Operatives of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, yesterday, arrested a 31-year-old single mother with 430 grammes of heroin hidden in her private part.
The suspect, Miss Aladi, was apprehended during the inward screening of passengers on an Emirates flight from Pakistan at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, MMIA, Lagos.
Speaking on the arrest, NDLEA Commander at the Lagos Airport, Mr. Hamza Umar, said the arrest was made through the help of the scanning machines at the airport.
He said: “During the inward screening of Emirates passengers, one Aladi tested positive for narcotic ingestion. While under observation, the drug was subsequently expelled, field-tested and weighed.”
He noted that the suspect was given the drug in Pakistan and had already established a link with some Pakistani drug traffickers, who sponsored her trip in collaboration with some local accomplices.
Meanwhile, Chairman of NDLEA, Ahmadu Giade said that the agency would continue to detect narcotics with the help of technological tools.
He also imployed the public to always support the fight against drug traffickers, stressing that drug control thrives on the principle of collective responsibility, adding that the suspect will soon be charged to court.
Narrating her ordeal, Miss Aladi said she engaged in drug trafficking to settle her bills.
She said: “I am a single mother and I need money to take care of myself and child. I used to sell clothes but the profit is inadequate to sustain my family.
“I would have earned half a million naira to pay my rent and my child’s school fees if I had succeeded in bringing the drug. They paid my return ticket and hotel accommodation.
“While in my hotel room, a Pakistani woman came to give me the drug. She also instructed me to conceal it in my private part to avoid arrest. Unfortunately, NDLEA officers detected it.”
The suspect, who is a 2007 graduate from Saint Anthony Secondary School, Aba, Abia State hails from Abia State.

OLOPAOO: Officer dupe policeauthoritiesof N40m

Operatives of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Lagos, have arrested a dismissed police sergeant for allegedly posing as an officer to defraud the Nigeria Police Force of about N40 million in eight years.
Victor Afamefuna Banor, after his dismissal from the Nigeria Police, forged personnel emolument records, including his last pay certificates and submitted them with fake names, ranks and force numbers to the Nigeria Police pay offices in Lagos, Edo, Cross River, Kaduna, Kogi, Ogun and Akwa Ibom states police commands and allegedly collected N40 million from the purse of the Nigeria Police under false pretence.
The police further alleged that the suspect perpetrated the fraud by transferring himself to all the aforementioned police commands with fake documents and promoted himself to the ranks of ASP, DSP and SP any time he received information about promotions in the Nigeria Police.
Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of FSARS Lagos, DCP Chris Ezike, had received an intelligence report on the activities of the suspect and directed a team, led by DSP Solomon Igwe, to fish out the suspect.
The police prosecutor, Supol Charles Odii, told the court that Banor committed the alleged offence between 2006 and 2014 in seven police commands in Nigeria.
He said the offences the defendant committed were punishable under the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011, Advanced Fee Fraud and Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006 and the Miscellaneous Offences Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
The presiding Judge, Justice J. Abang, adjourned the case till May 4 and 5 for trial and ordered that the defendant be remanded in prison custody.

#JONATHAN: Morocco recalls its envoy to Nigeria over royal phone call

Morocco has recalled its ambassador to Nigeria, in a row over whether President Goodluck Jonathan was trying to use the King of Morocco to win over Muslim voters before the general elections scheduled for March 28 and April 11.
Last week, the Moroccan royal palace said the king had declined a request for a telephone conversation with the Nigeria President.
Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, however, denied the snub, Monday, saying the two leaders had spoken extensively.
According to a report by foreign news agency, Reuters, the Nigerian foreign ministry said it was “preposterous to suggest that Mr. President’s telephone call to the Moroccan monarch was intended to confer any electoral advantage.”
In its own reaction, the Moroccan foreign ministry, in a statement said: “Morocco confirms, in the clearest and strongest terms, that there has never been a phone conversation between King Mohammed VI and the President of this country.”
Morocco cited “the hostile, recurrent and unfriendly positions of the Nigerian government with regard to the Moroccan Sahara issue and the sacred Arab-Muslim causes” as reasons for declining Jonathan’s call.
Nigeria is one of the main supporters, along with Algeria and South Africa on the continent, of the independence movement Polisario Front in the disputed Western Sahara.
The territory is a tract of desert the size of Britain, that has lucrative phosphate reserves and possibly oil.

All I want right now is the love making

I’m in my late twenties and definitely not in a hurry to settle down. I’ve had a series of one-night stands that have ended with me being verbally abused by the women I’ve made love to even though they wanted it as much as I did.
This makes me feel I might not be handling the whole fling thing very well and I must be giving out mixed messages to the girls I’ve met.

You could spell out your intentions but in a light-hearted way. If your line works and they agree, your conscience is clear.
However, you need to choose your partners with sensitivity. If you’re guessing the girl you’re chatting up is naive and has marriage on her mind, don’t go there.
Believe me, there are loads of girls out there who also want no-strings relationships.

My step-father sneaked into my room

I AM an undergraduate in one of the universities and I’ve recently done something really terrible.
My mum was a single mother of two for years until she got married to a nice widower last year.
The man has just completed his house, so we all moved in with him along with the three children from his first marriage.
We had the house-warming party around Christmas and we all had too much to drink. In the night my step dad came over and we made love.
My head cleared in the morning and I’ve felt horribly guilty ever since. My step dad now carries on as if nothing happened but I feel really guilty and don’t know what to do.
I don’t want mum to know what happened, yet she needs to be aware of the type of maniac she is married to. Please help.

This is definitely a tricky situation. Your mum will definitely be hurt if you tell her what has happened. In fact, she may be so bent on defending her new found happiness she might choose to trust her new husband and not you.
Your best bet is to have a heart to heart chat with your step dad. Tell him how much you love your mum and how you’ve both betrayed her trust by sleeping together. Then let him realize you’re willing to put the ugly incident behind you if he promises it won’t happen again.
Sadly, what you’ve just experienced is not new though that doesn’t make it right. If this man breaks his promise and tries again, then you’ll have no option than to tell your mum or confide in a trusted member of the family who can effectively intervene.

KIDNAP: Student kidnaps brother to raise money for car

They were young, ambitious and eager to be rich. And they also thought the best way to actualise this dream of joining the millionaires' club was to take to kidnapping for ransom. Unfortunately for them, they are presently cooling their heels at the Bauchi State Police Command for kidnapping a three-year-old boy and demanding a ransom of N10 million from the parents.

The suspects, Salisu Abdullahi Salmanu, 19 years, of Kofar Idi, Bauchi; Imrana Abdullahi, 17 years; Abdullahi Mohammed and Umar Musa, 19 years, were arrested by Police detectives in the state.

The victim, Abdulkadir Salmanu, is the younger brother of one of the suspects, Salisu Addullahi, said to be a cousin to the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Minister, Bala Mohammed.

When he was paraded before journalists along with three of his friends, 19-year-old Saliu Abdullahi Salmanu said the decision to kidnap his three-year-old step-brother was motivated by his desire to raise money to buy a car. Salman is a year one student of the Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi.

He said: “I am accountancy student of Federal Polytechnic Bauchi. Though my father is very rich, any time I demanded money from him, he will refuse to give me, saying he has three wives and will have to cater for other children.

“So, I planned with my friends to kidnap my step brother who is three years old. I wanted my friends to call my father and demand for a ransom so that when he pays the ransom, I can collect my own share and use it to buy a car and be like my rich friends who have their own cars.”

One morning, the farmer’s wife woke up, looked out of the window and saw their only cow lying dead in the field.  

Òh no!”she wailed, “now we have no animals left, what can I do, how can I feed us?”and she was so distraught, she hanged herself.

When the farmer woke up, he discovered his dead wife and was so overcome with grief, she shot himself. So three sons were left on their own. The first son went walking along the seashore and met a mermaid.  “Don’t look so sad,” she said. “If you have sex with me five times, I will bring your family back to life and restore your farm to its former glory.”

So, the boy gladly took up the offer. But by the fourth round he was struggling and was unable to perform at all on the fift attempt. Bitterly disappointed, he walked into the sea and drowned himself.

Some time later, the second son came by and bumped into the mermaid. “Do not despair,” she said. “Ïf you can make love to me 10 times, I have the power to bring back your family and make the farm successful.”

Eagerly, the boy agreed and began with determination. Alas, he failed after number seven and was so ashamed he walked into the sea as well. So there was only the youngest son left. He went looking for his brothers and was met by the mermaid.

She told him what had happened, but assured him that all could be put right if he made love to her 25 times. The boy thought for a moment and replied warily: “Yeah, but how can I be sure it won’t kill you just like it did the cow?”

Policeman shoot dead scavenger over N200

An overzealous police officer from ‘C’ Division in Kogi State Police Command shot dead a scavenger in Lokoja over the deceased’s refusal to give him N200 ‘weekend tip’.
The development caused heavy traffic on the ever-busy Ganaja Road as friends and colleagues of the scavenger took to the street, burning tyres and disturbing vehicular movement.
An eyewitness said one of the Policemen, who were on routine visit to the site at 200 housing units, where the scavengers usually gather their wares for onward sale to interested buyers, shot him twice in the head after his refusal to part with the usual weekly stipends, which resulted in a heated altercation.
One of the dead scavenger’s colleagues said: “The Police visit us (scavengers site) and demanded to know the identity of the owner of a caravan (pointing to the caravan).
“When we told them that the person who brought it said he could only come out tomorrow because he also bought it from an Igbo man, the police asked him (the deceased) to part with some money.
“He declined because he was not the owner of the caravan, and in the process, they began to attack the deceased, dragging him on the floor and eventually one of them shot him on the head and he died immediately.”
It took the intervention of men of SARs to disperse the protesting youths, who demanded justice over the death of their colleague.

Woman kills husband in Enugu

The police in Enugu have arrested a housewife for allegedly hacking her husband to death over an undisclosed reason.
The deceased, identified as Elijah Agbo, hailed from Imirike Agu village in Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State.
The incident, according to the state Police Command’s spokesman, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, took place last Thursday at about 9pm, after the suspect sent her daughter to sleep.
Amaraizu said in a statement:  “The wife, Grace Agbo, suddenly asked their daughter, Deborah, a 12-year-old, to go to bed.
“As soon as the daughter went in, she heard a loud sound and came out quickly, and saw the father on the ground with blood gushing out of his head.
“It was discovered that the mother used a big stick to hit the father on the head which allegedly caused him severe injury, forcing him to fall down, became unconscious and later gave up the ghost.
“The body of the deceased had been deposited at General Hospital mortuary, Ikem, for autopsy, while the suspect has been arrested by police operatives.”

#INFIDELITY: 'My wife took poison because I caught her with another man'

A 33-year-old man, who is currently being investigated by operatives of the homicide unit of Lagos State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Yaba, has denied killing his wife.
“My wife took poison after a misunderstanding over her infidelity,” he said.
It was gathered that the couple, who had been married for over seven years, had three children. The 27-year-old Togolese reportedly committed suicide after her husband, Seun Alabi, confronted her over allegations of extra-marital affairs.
Alabi, a tiler, had used his wife, Bose’s phone to call a colleague before leaving for work. Afterwards, Bose called the same number, thinking it was her lover’s number, and requested that they met at her friend’s place.
Surprised by the request, the husband’s colleague (names withheld) told her that she had mistaken him for someone else. She apologized and ended the call.
However, trouble started when Seun’s colleague told him about the call. When he returned from work and confronted his wife, she initially denied the allegations but later admitted to engaging in extra-marital affair.
According to Seun, “I threatened to report her to her family members, so she confessed and pleaded for forgiveness. I was surprised and could not imagine that she could cheat on me after seven years of marriage.
“I was angry and slept on the three-seater. It was her legs that were hitting me, that woke me from sleep and I saw her in severe pains. I then saw an empty bottle of sniper insecticide on the table.
“I raised alarm and neighbours rushed inside to help. One of them brought palm oil, which I gave to her. But when we realized that it was more than we can handle, we rushed her to the hospital. On our way to Ogba General Hospital, she died.”
A relative of the deceased (names with held) accused the suspect of having a hand in the death of the victim, adding that until the demise of Bose, Seun had not paid her dowry, despite living together for years and bearing him children.
Seun said: “I could not pay my wife’s bride price because my wife’s family asked for about a million naira, which I could not raise.”

Operators in the oil and gas sector have blamed the ongoing fuel scarcity witnessed across the country on the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN’s directives to financial institutions.
According to the operators, who chose not to be named, in late December 2014, with oil prices falling, CBN directed all banks to reduce transactions with oil and gas companies due to pending liquidity issues and fiscal challenges in meeting the vast funding demands of oil and gas companies.
The communiqué, the operators said, was sent out on the back of a recent risk-based supervision exercise which highlighted the financial industry’s level of exposure to the oil and gas sector combined with existing risk management deficiencies, and the necessary steps to ensure that banks have sufficient capital buffers to mitigate escalating risk-taking activities.
They said: “Additionally, CBN recently closed the retail Dutch Auction System/wholesale Dutch Auction System, rDAS/wDAS, segment of the foreign exchange market, and quoted an exchange rate of N198, inferring a naira devaluation at the interbank foreign exchange market and further prompting pressure on the nation’s currency.
“The apex bank also banned commercial banks from re-selling CBN dollars to other banks in an attempt to end naira speculation, and by scrapping its window of direct sale of foreign exchange to end users has directed that all foreign exchange needs are to be sourced from the interbank market, which has rate ranging from N197 to N198 to $1.
“Consequently, the CBN’s actions have led to precautionary measures taken by marketers on the importation of products, and a larger reliance on product allocation by the Pipeline Product Marketing Company, PPMC, the marketing entity of NNPC, which said it had injected a further 688 million litres of PMS into the market to alleviate the ongoing shortage.”
They said marketers now face the challenge of fund sourcing, letters of credit and, more critically, restrictions on the purchase of Forex to enable the steady flow of product importation and that they will find it very difficult to function without the appropriate fiscal backing required from commercial banks and CBN in particular.

Widow hides husband’s corpse for three years

Policemen attached to Ojokoro Division in Lagos have arrested a 60-year-old woman and her two children for allegedly refusing to release the corpse of her late husband to his family members for proper burial, three years after his demise.
Rather, the decomposing body of her late husband, identified as Jimoh Shittu, was reportedly discovered at her family’s house at Ojokoro area of the state, Tuesday, by the Police.
Vanguard gathered that there had been a strained relationship between the widow, Mrs Joy Shittu, and members of her late husband’s family, before his demise.
A member of the late Shittu’s family, who spoke on condition of anonymity told Vanguard: “We were never aware that our brother was dead.
“All we were made to understand each time we called was that he was not medically fit. Since he passed on, Joy (the widow) prevented us from seeing his corpse.
“First, she made attempt to bury his body at our mother’s home town in Delta State, which is against our tradition.
“Since then, we never knew where the body was until Tuesday, when we got hint that it was kept at her family’s house at 14b, Olaitan Mustaph, off Clem Road, Ifako-Ijaiye, Ojokoro.
“When the body was retrieved by the Police, we discovered it was embalmed and that he died three years ago.”
The 60-year-old widow told policemen that her reason for attempting to bury her late husband in Warri, Delta State, was to fulfil his wish, adding that the building she intended burying him was his.
She further explained that on reaching Delta State, it was discovered that the building in question was occupied by a new owner, who claimed it was sold to him by her late husband.
Asked why she refused to hint her husband’s family about his demise, she simply attributed it to the strained relationship.
The widow and her two children, whose identities were given as Aishat and Toyin, were said to have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, yesterday, for further investigation , while the corpse had been deposited at the mortuary for autopsy.

Woman gags, binds, abandons 2-yr-old step-daughter in Ogun

A housewife, Christanah Faturoti, 28, has been arrested by Ogun State Police Command over alleged attempt to murder her two-year-old -step-daughter on February 17.
Vanguard gathered that the suspect had reportedly gagged the girl, tied her hands behind her, left her in the room and went to her place of work. She is an attendant at a petrol station in the town.
Vanguard reliably gathered that it was noises made by the baby that attracted some passers-by, who reported to the police in the town.
Whe the policemen were alerted, they reportedly raced to the scene and forced open the door.
According to an eyewitness, the police immediately rescued the baby and rushed her to a hospital.
The suspect was subsequently arrested and transferred to Police Zonal Headquarters in Abeokuta for further investigation.

It was learned that the biological mother of the victim was said to be mentally deranged, which reportedly prompted the decision of the father to put the baby in the care of the step-mother.
The suspect, who has a one- year-old baby, confessed to the crime, saying she acted in that manner because her husband was paying too much attention to the step-daughter than her.
When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the incident, adding that the suspect would be charged to court on completion of investigation.
He said it was a criminal offence that should not be swept under the carpet.
Adejobi said: “Everybody is surprised over the action of the woman. How can you beat your step-daughter into coma, gag and tie her hands. It is not only barbaric, it is criminal. The woman would be charged to court.”
He called on parents, whose children live with relatives, to ensure adequate monitoring.

My friend and my wife are having an affair!

My childhood friend got appointed into a very juicy post and since then, my fortunes have changed. He’s thrown a lot of contracts my way and we’ve been able to complete our own house and change cars.
He has also made my wife the official caterer of the establishment he works with and she too has become financially secured in her own rights. But not as secured as the way she’s spending money. She buys any aso-ebi going, no matter how expensive, and the array of her jewels is mind-boggling.
Lately, her catering contract has been stretched to providing afternoon lunches for the directors and I’ve heard talks that my friend sleeps with my wife regularly and nobody in his office dares complain about her catering no matter how shoddy it is.
I tried to stop her working but my own contracts not only stopped, I found it difficult to collect money for the ones I’d already completed. So I lifted my ban, and of course, contracts started coming in again.
I feel humiliated that things have to be this way. The kids are now used to fancy things and I never want to go back to the days where I had to scrimp and save.
I’ve been advised to look the other way as things like that happen all the time. But I don’t love my wife any more even though I have this feeling that if I sent her packing, I, along with our three children, would be the ones to suffer. We’ve been married 19 years.

It is sad that men use their wives as baits for contracts these days without batting an eyelid. It’s obvious you feel betrayed by your friend and your wife but is the affluence you now enjoy worth losing your self-respect?
What about the children? Wouldn’t they realize that their mother is now the power broker in the family! Where would that leave you?.
Your fear is that if you ask your wife to leave she would laugh and happily dance out of your life. Sadly, you alone can choose between these two evils.

Pregnant woman pours hot water on neighbour for spying on her while bathing

A pregnant woman, Mrs Mercy Chintua, has been arrested by operatives of Enugu State Police Command over allegation of assault on her neighbour, whom she said spied on her while she was taking her bath.
The suspect, who resides at Akwuke, Awkunanaw axis of Enugu State, had allegedly poured hot water on the victim, Emmanuel Anyebe, for allegedly peeping on her while she was having her bath on February 23.
Confirming the incident, Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu said: “Mercy poured hot water on the victim as he was going to have his bath. She alleged that the victim was peeping into the bathroom, while she was having her bath.
“The hot water inflicted serious body burns on the victim. As a result of the injuries sustained from the act, he was unconscious and was rushed to a nearby hospital.
“The victim has denied ever peeping on the woman during her bath.
“The suspect has pleaded for leniency, ascribing her actions to demonic spirits in her.”

It all started like a joke one evening after dinner, when my husband suggested the idea to me. I really didn’t give it much thought before I agreed.

War started on Facebook leaves 14-yr-old girl dead

Alabama(USA) police have arrested two teenage boys who opened fire on a group of fighting girls, which left 14 years old Kierra'onna Rice dead.
Rice was one of some girls that started a quarrel on Facebook. They then decided to make it physical at a park.
That was when two boys pulled out guns and started shooting.
The deceased is believed to have been fighting one of the boys' girlfriend.

Lecturers harassed Ekpoma student for 12 years; UNN student for 8 years— ICPC

IT was a shocking revelation at the ongoing budget defence in the Senate, Friday, as Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission, ICPC, Mr. Ekpo Nta, disclosed that that ICPC had saved a female undergraduate of Ambrose Ali University, Ekpoma, who was allegedly victimized by some of her lecturers for 12 years, because she refused to give in to their sexual overtures.
He said: “There is a student at the University of Nigeria Nsukka, who spent eight years without graduating and was being victimized. We moved in, and through us he graduated.
“We moved into Ambrose Ali University, Ekpoma. A girl stayed there for 12 years on the basis of sexual harassment. She has graduated and we are working on prosecuting all the officials involved.”

Suspected suicide bomber set ablaze

A suspected female suicide bomber was, yesterday, burnt by a mob in Mudal Lawal Market in Bauchi, Bauchi State.
The incident, which occurred at about 7pm, attracted residents who rushed to the market area to behold the burnt body of the lady.
An eyewitness said the alleged bomber refused to be screened and attempted to escape.
The witness said: “A female, wearing a long hijab wanted to enter the market, but was stopped at the entrance to be searched.
“The security team at the market started to suspect that she was carrying an Improvised Explosive Devise, IED, which made her to refuse screening.
“The suspected bomber then attempted to escape, but a mob went into action and set her ablaze.”
Confirming the incident, state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Haruna Mohammed, said: “The lady was attacked by a mob, who took the law into their hands and set her ablaze.
“She died before rescue could come. Police patrol teams, including Explosive Ordinance Disposal unit, rushed to the scene, dispersed the crowd and restored normalcy to the area.”
The PPRO said the case was under investigation and that intensive patrol was ongoing in the area to apprehend the perpetrators and prevent further breakdown of law and order.
He then warned members of the public against taking the law into their hands, adding that anyone arrested would face the full wrath of the law.

Police, one other dead in a stop-and-search gone wrong

An attempt by a suspect to disarm a police corporal in Calabar, weekend, ended in the death of the Policeman, while colleagues of the dead policeman also gunned down the suspect.
An eyewitness, who gave his name as Ikechuckwu, said a team of policemen on patrol stopped a taxi in front of 268 Murtala Muhammed Highway (8 Miles) and asked two men seated at the back of the taxi to alight, but they refused.
According to Ikechuckwu, “the police van blocked the taxi and asked the two men at the back seat to alight, but they refused and the police had to force them out and after they alighted, one of them tried to collect a gun from one of the policemen.
“A struggle ensued and in the process, the gun discharged and killed the policeman, and in anger, another policeman shot the man dead.”
When contacted, Mr Hogan Bassey, the state Police spokesman, said the incident was a gun duel between the police and armed robbers.
“Robbers fired and killed one of our men and our men fired back and killed one of the robbers,” he said.

Love bathed her with acid

WARRI—an accidental meeting between 24-year-old hair stylist, Miss Juliet Osimen from Esan West Local Government Area, Edo State, and a young man from Emu-Unoh, Ndokwa West Area, Delta State, in Warri, glued them together.

Barely three years into the affair, the young man shattered the promising life of his lover with a cruel acid bath.

After battling to survive with a year-long intensive care at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, UBTH, Benin, Edo State, Juliet still requires over N5 million lifeline for a medical trip to Indian, as she struggles to pick up the pieces of her devastated life.

... in the beginning

Juliet met the man while working at a fast food centre in the Niger Cat neighbourhood of Ekpan, Delta State, where her father, Pastor Sunday Osimen, farmer and Head at the Mountain of God’s Grace Ministry in the area, also owns a modest home.

Recalling the good times, Juliet said: “He was very generous in the relationship and often granted most of the requests I made. As a result, I hardly hesitated when he started making proposals for marriage and coming close to my family.

“When we met, he was living with his uncle at Nnewi Street, off Aka Avenue, Effurun.

“As the relationship grew, we rented a self-contain apartment at satellite Ugolo community, Okpe Council area, where we shared privacy occasionally, while I still lived with my parents.

‘My fears’

“Though I cherished his uncommon generosity towards me and my siblings, I started getting worried about the source of his income, which to me did not connect with the generator repairs job he told me he does for a living.

“My suspicions were confirmed the day we went to Obiaruku for the marriage of his friend. There is a particular bag he does not allow me or anyone else touch at all.

“This fateful day, as he was having an after wedding drinking spree with friends in the hotel we lodged, I opened the secret bag in our room.

“I was shocked by two items I found. An identity card as a Federal Government Amnesty beneficiary and a document listing guns and other dangerous weapons submitted by his group during the arms mop up.

“From that moment, my interest in the affair died and I wanted out immediately. I knew I was living with an unrepentant criminal because he is easily irritated and always bragging about how tough he is and how he can deal with anyone and go away with it.

He was married with 3 kids

“That night at Obiaruku, I confronted him on his criminal identity and why he kept it from me. He said he was worried I would leave him and he does not want to lose me.

“That moment, I made it clear I was no longer interested and would not marry a criminal disguising as repentant. I meant every word of it.

“But I knew it was dangerous to make a sudden quit, so I started limiting my contact with him and thinking of how best to stop the affair permanently.

“Then, I further learned that the man I was planning to marry is a father of three, married to a woman elsewhere.

“I confronted him. He admitted and again said he kept that from me for fear of losing me. He said he could not do without me, so he wants me as second wife. I said over my dead body.

... and the threats began

“As I gradually limited my contact with him, he introduced a catch phrase whenever the issue of breaking the relationship came up.

“He would say, ‘You can’t leave me. If you try it, I will so damage you that no man would want to look at you, so I will still be the only one to marry you.’

“I could tell from his anger and tone, whenever he says it, that this was no empty threat, but I needed to get out of the affair.

“I trained as a hair stylist and work for a salon owner, while also doing home service for some clients on Sundays.

“One Sunday, I was home fixing a customer’s hair when my phone rang. It was his call so I ignored it.

“Usually, he is very jealous and gets upset if he does not know my whereabouts and cannot get me on the phone for a second and he can beat me for that.

Pulling a knife; the acid bath

“At night at Ugolo that day, he pulled a knife from the kitchen, threatening to kill me, saying he saw a man taking me out the period I failed to pick his call.

“I was afraid he could harm me so I refused confrontation with him before he dropped the knife. Next morning, he came to my work place apologizing for his action after complaining to my madam.

“The evening of the Monday (February 25, 2013) after the Sunday he threatened me with a knife at Ugolo, I refused his calls again after closing from work and went to my parents’ home.

“He then called my younger sister, asking if my parents were home. That was about midnight.

“It was very hot that night. At some minutes to 1am, February 26, I had just my towel tied on me when I slept close to the window.

“Suddenly, I heard and felt a shower of liquid from outside through the window. The person aimed and poured it all over my body as I lay faced up.

“Immediately, I started shouting, 'he has poured acid on me' repeatedly and ran out as the liquid was burning my body. I saw him running away.”

A father's story

Her father, Pastor Osimen, said he and the wife, Caroline, were at their farmhouse at Orega, along Sapele Road, where they farm most weekdays before retiring home to the children and church service on Sunday, when got a distressing message.

He said: “I was contacted after she had been rushed to the Ekpan General Hospital. I returned from the farming expedition and lodged complaint at the Ekpan Police Division.

“We could not not focus on the police case because saving my daughter’s life first was uppermost.

“From Ekpan General Hospital, she was referred to the Oghara Teaching Hospital, Oghara in Delta State. From there, she was referred to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, UBTH, in Benin, Edo State.

“She was under intensive care at UBTH for almost a year with the medical bill rising to N2 million, way beyond my purse. But by some divine intervention, some persons from the Edo State government, I guess, came and settled the huge bill before she was discharged.”

Arrested

Pastor Osimen asserted, “back to Delta at the close of 2014, we opened the case to prosecute him at the Warri Area Command.

“After two years in hiding, within which even his uncle at Aka Avenue also relocated to unknown location, the police caught him.”

It was learned that a source who knew him, noticed that he was in custody at the Ekpan Police Station, having being arrested and brought from Lagos in connection with a kidnap case.

According to Juliet’s father, “when I met him at Ekpan Police Station, I said to him, ‘Is this you?’ he replied, ‘Daddy, I beg.’

“I said, ‘you are begging to go free after deliberately maiming my daughter?’”

N5m lifeline to save a soul

Juliet’s doctor said at least N5 million was required for further treatment abroad to further manage the dreadful scars of the acid burns, especially her face and the chest region, as well as the health challenges the attack still pose to her.

Juliet said: “It is hard to explain how bad and demoralized I feel over this condition I have found myself.

“I am, however, very grateful to God and those who have assisted me. But I need to be able to fulfill my dreams in life. I was to sit for JAMB before the attack.

“I still want to get higher education; I still want to be useful to myself. Now I can hardly do anything meaningful.”

Joined by his wife, Pastor Osimen said: “We are appealing to the public to please help us and our daughter with donations to go to India for her surgery.
