Both officers were attached to the Kajola Divisional Police Station, Kajola town, Odigbo council area of the state.
Aruechi, until his death, was a Divisional Crime Officer, DCO, in the station.
Sources said the deceased Inspector “was investigating a case and his superior got wind that he had collected a huge amount of bribe from a complainant.”
Confrontation
The superior officer was said to have queried his subordinate, following which an argument ensued. The superior officer was said to have reprimanded the Inspector for collecting and concealing the bribe money.
Infuriated, the Inspector reportedly stormed out of the office and went for his gun. He shot his superior at close range, killing him instantly.
The gunshot in the station caused a stir as policemen on duty and other complainants at the counter scampered for safety.
Report had it that the Inspector then went straight to the back of the station and jumped inside a well.
By the time the policemen that fled the scene for safety summoned courage and returned to the station, they met the Superintendent on the floor, dead.
One of the policemen, who saw the inspector when he jumped inside the well, informed others of what happened to him.
His corpse was later removed by officers of the fire service station in the town.
The corpses of the two policemen, according to Police source, have been deposited at the state hospital mortuary in Ore.
Police confirm incident
Contacted, the state police spokesman, Femi Joseph, confirmed the incident and described it as unfortunate. He said a thorough investigation on the matter had commenced.
His words: “It is an unfortunate incident, but we have begun investigation. The Command is very saddened over the incident and our hearts are heavy.
“We are doing everything possible to further dig into the matter and also to talk to our officers and men on the need to avert similar occurrence.”
