Judicial workers blame poor justice delivery on corruption

CHAIRMAN of Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, JUSUN, Delta State branch, Mr. Augustine Chiejina, has said corruption is a major clog hampering effective delivery of justice in the world, particularly in Nigeria.
Speaking during the opening ceremony of the maiden judiciary staff week in Asaba, Chiejina said their choice of the theme, Integrity and Transparency, Panacea for Efficient Judicial Administration, was to better address perceived anomalies affecting the growth of judiciary in the country.

He lamented that people perceive the judiciary to be the second most corrupt sector after the Police, adding “in the last decade, governments and development partners’ efforts to reform the judiciary have been undermined by corruption and few have taken concrete steps to address it.”
He said their focus on the role of government and judiciary employees will encourage development partners and researchers to work together in mapping out corruption risks in the overall justice system to develop a more integrated programme on anti-corruption and the Rule of Law.
“Although there are several international standards on judicial integrity and independence, implementation is the challenge,” he said.
Chiejina listed programme for the week-long event to include a football match at Government House Squash Club, Asaba; road walk from Customary Court of Appeal, Cable Point to High Court of Justice Complex, Asaba, and free medical healthcare at the Customary Court of Appeal Premises, High Court Road, Asaba.
